The Ethical Epic
Understanding Ethics Through Cicero.

Ethics: Just as interesting as the Pythagorean Theorem

Teacher and Group Guide

The Ethical Epic can easily be used to teach a class or group about ethics. It's important that middle school and high school students have the ability to make ethical decisions. Ethics are essential in business, science, medicine, government, and many other fields. While you can choose how to use The Ethical Epic, the instructions below show one possibility.

The following files will help guide a class or group through the Ethical Epic as described below:

Sequence:

  1. Use the program to present ethics and Cicero's dilemma to the whole class or group.
  2. Once you have reached the summary screen for the dilemma, pass out worksheet 1 to half of the students or group and worksheet 2 to the other half.
  3. Ask them to read side one of their sheet and to pay attention to their character of either Antipater or Diogenes.
  4. Then either have them pair up - one Antipater to one Diogenes - or discuss the dilemma as a whole with each participant using the perspective laid out in their sheet.
  5. Once students have discussed the dilemma and all perspectives laid out in the worksheets and then some, have them look at side two of the worksheet.
  6. They can either fill out the second side on their own or as a class using the program to help guide them. If you use the program to guide the class or group, stop at the text boxes for the ethical scale.
  7. Once students have filled out the second side of their sheet. Ask them to share the people and things that affect their decision and enter them into the text boxes for the ethical scale. Then ask students to place them on the scale under either honor or benefit.
  8. Then have students vote on whether or not to tell the Rhodians. If some students have a different approach, ask them to share it and include it in the vote.
